Jhota's father calls for Punjab shutdown on October 15, demands CM, DGP resign

Chandigarh, Oct 14 (UNI) The father of slain anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota on Wednesday called for a statewide shutdown on October 15, demanding the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Director General of Police, a CBI investigation into his son's murder and criminal proceedings against senior police officials.
Bhim Singh, Jhota's father, appealed to political parties, social organisations, activists and the public to support the Punjab Bandh from 6 a.m. until the evening, while assuring that ambulances and essential medical services would remain unaffected. Jhota was shot dead on October 13 during a confrontation at a medical store in Mansa while he was live streaming the alleged sale of heroin.
"If the conscience of the Chief Minister and the DGP awakens, they should resign on their own," Bhim Singh said, demanding that the murder investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
He also sought the dismissal of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Station House Officer (SHO), along with the registration of criminal cases against them to establish accountability.
Appealing for public participation in Thursday's shutdown, he said, "We earnestly appeal to the people of Punjab to observe this shutdown starting from the morning."
He made clear that patients would not be inconvenienced. "Emergency services, such as ambulances transporting patients, will be allowed to pass; they will not be stopped," he said, adding that people requiring medicines would also be permitted to obtain them.
Raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his son's killing, Bhim Singh demanded an investigation into a telephone conversation allegedly involving the accused at the time of the murder.
"Who was he calling? Was it a government official, a family member, or another drug smuggler? All these details must be ascertained," he said.
He demanded that everyone found involved in the killing be named in the First Information Report (FIR).
Bhim Singh also called for the immediate release of any protesters detained by police and demanded that authorities refrain from preventing people from joining Thursday's demonstration.
The shutdown call comes amid mounting demands for an independent investigation into the killing of Jhota, who had been campaigning against drug trafficking in Punjab.
The allegations concerning police accountability and possible involvement of other individuals remain subject to investigation. UNI NB CDS
