Haryana: SP Manpreet Sudan warns of fake SMS links

Kaithal, Oct 13 (UNI) Superintendent of Police Manpreet Singh Sudan has warned the public, saying that cyber criminals are sending fake SMS messages claiming to be from a bank, government department, courier company, lottery, prize, or refund, and attaching a link to the SMS.
"This link looks like the real thing. But in some cases, even clicking on a link gives control of the phone to cyber criminals. They access your phone's contact list and send similar fake links to others. Often, fear or greed is created by using excuses like "Your account will be blocked ," " You've won a prize ," " You're due for a refund ," or " A parcel is stuck ."
The Superintendent of Police explained that clicking on the link opens a fake bank website. You're asked to enter your login ID, password , OTP , and PIN. Malware is installed in the background. All messages are read from your mobile phone, and OTPs are automatically intercepted. The fraudsters also send similar SMS messages to others using your name.
His advice: "Do not click on any unknown or suspicious message link. Banks/Government departments never ask for information through links. Do not share OTP, PIN , password with anyone. Login only through the official app or website. Keep your mobile phone and bank app updated. If you have any doubt, immediately contact the bank or cyber cell. If you click on the link by mistake, immediately call the bank/UPI/wallet and get it blocked. Remove the unknown app from your phone. Change your password and strengthen the security settings. If you become a victim of cyber crime, immediately register your complaint by calling 1930". UNI XC CDS
