Haryana Speaker calls for political consensus on state's development challenges

Panchkula, Nov 2 (UNI) As Haryana completes 60 years of statehood, Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan on Monday urged political parties to rise above ideological differences and work towards a common development agenda, saying the State's next phase of growth would require collective efforts to address emerging challenges and shortcomings.
Addressing the concluding session of the Conference of Public Representatives at Indradhanush Auditorium here, Kalyan said the state's six-decade journey provided an opportunity to assess past achievements, identify gaps and prepare a roadmap for a self-reliant and developed Haryana.
"Political ideologies may differ, but the ultimate objective of all public representatives should be the welfare of society, the state and the nation," Kalyan said.
The conference, organised by the Haryana Legislative Assembly as part of its Constitution Fortnight initiative, brought together serving and former legislators to review the state's development since its formation in 1966.
Kalyan said the deliberations covered the contributions of successive chief ministers and public representatives, major achievements over six decades and priorities for future development.
Around 21 public representatives, including Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, shared their views at the conference, which was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The Speaker said development should not be measured merely by the construction of roads, buildings and other infrastructure, but also by the extent to which citizens understood their rights and responsibilities.
"True development is achieved when every section of society becomes equally aware of its rights as well as its duties," he said.
Highlighting legislative reforms introduced over the past two years, Kalyan said the Assembly had organised training programmes and workshops to improve the efficiency of legislators and officials.
He also called for greater coordination among legislative institutions and the sharing of best parliamentary practices, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'One Nation, One Legislature'.
Kalyan said public representatives had a crucial role in encouraging public participation and building an informed society capable of contributing to Haryana's development.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Deputy Speaker Krishan Lal Middha said Haryana's journey from 1966 to 2026 reflected six decades of struggle, hard work and collective determination.
He credited farmers, soldiers, workers, women and young people for transforming Haryana into an important contributor to the country's development.
Middha said successive generations of public representatives had also played a significant role in shaping the state's progress and strengthening its democratic institutions.
