Himachal Congress leaders protest alleged curbs on opposition, question EC neutrality

Shimla, October 8 (UNI) The Shimla Urban District Congress Committee on Thursday staged a peaceful silent protest here against what it described as attempts to suppress the voice of the opposition and undermine democratic institutions.
The protest was led by District Congress Committee president Inderjit Singh, with party workers and office-bearers wearing black ribbons on their hands to register their opposition to the alleged “repressive” policies of the government.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders alleged that the government was using undemocratic means to suppress the voice of the opposition. They claimed that the impartiality of constitutional institutions was under threat and said serious questions were being raised over their functioning.
The Congress leaders strongly condemned the alleged detention and mistreatment of opposition leaders, terming the action “dictatorial and undemocratic”. They alleged that peaceful opposition leaders were being targeted for raising their voice on issues concerning democracy.
The protesters also raised questions over the neutrality of the Election Commission, claiming that its credibility and impartiality had come under serious scrutiny. They alleged that the government had maintained silence on the issue.
The Congress leaders also criticised the alleged use of police and administrative force against peaceful opposition protesters, describing it as “shameful and condemnable”.
The district Congress committee warned that no amount of force would silence the voice of the opposition and said the party would continue its struggle to protect democracy “from the streets to Parliament”.
Among those present were state Congress vice-president Amit Nanda, Sonia, Krishna, Reena Pundir and Babli, besides Shimla Urban District Congress Committee office-bearers Deepak Sundriyal, Ravi Rana, Vinesh Thakur, Kushal Pal Singh, Jai Prakash, Uma Verma, general secretary Mukesh Bhatia, Dixit Jogta, Sumit Gautam, secretary Gurvinder Singh, Puneet, Gaurav, Sandeep Thakur, Mahindrajit Bablu, Pankaj, Ranjit Colonel and Kumar.
