Himachal govt extends Rs 17.09 cr welfare assistance to 2,263 defence beneficiaries

Shimla, September 27 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh government has provided financial assistance and grants amounting to Rs 17.09 crore to 2,263 beneficiaries during 2025-26 under various welfare schemes for ex-servicemen, war widows, dependents of defence personnel and gallantry award winners, the government said on Sunday.
The assistance was extended through the Sainik Welfare Department as part of measures aimed at providing social security, rehabilitation support and financial assistance to serving and retired Armed Forces personnel and their families. Under the Old Age Pension Scheme, Rs 6.13 crore was provided to 968 beneficiaries, while Rs 3 crore was released to 1,084 gallantry award winners of the state in recognition of their distinguished service and acts of exceptional courage.
The government also extended Rs 7.62 crore to 57 dependents of defence personnel who were killed or disabled in action. In addition, Rs 20.83 lakh was provided to 154 War-Jagir beneficiaries, while Rs 6 lakh was released to the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centres at Pune and Mohali.
As an immediate assistance measure, Rs 75,000 is provided to the next of kin of Armed Forces personnel who die during service. The government has also allocated Rs 6.74 lakh for maintenance of Sainik Welfare Buildings across the state.
The state has simultaneously continued its support for recruitment of youth into the Armed Forces.
During 2025-26, Rs 2.28 crore was sanctioned for organising Army recruitment rallies in Kangra, Hamirpur, Mandi and Shimla districts.
To strengthen training and preparatory facilities for Armed Forces aspirants, Rs 10.26 crore was provided to the Major Somnath Sharma Training Academy at Barchwar in Mandi district during the financial year.
The academy provides training and guidance to youth preparing to join the Armed Forces.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said Armed Forces personnel were making an invaluable contribution to the security and integrity of the nation and the state government remained committed to the welfare of soldiers, ex-servicemen and their families.
He said every possible support would be extended to war widows, dependents of defence personnel, gallantry award winners and other eligible beneficiaries through effective implementation of welfare schemes.
Sukhu said Himachal Pradesh had a long tradition of contributing to the Armed Forces, with its youth serving the nation with courage, discipline and dedication.
He said the government would continue to strengthen welfare infrastructure, recruitment support and training facilities for defence aspirants and personnel.
The measures, the government said, are intended to ensure timely assistance to defence personnel and their families, particularly during critical circumstances.
