Himachal, New Zealand discuss technology and innovation in apple horticulture

Shimla, October 1 (UNI)Himachal Pradesh and New Zealand discussed technology, innovation and technical cooperation to strengthen apple horticulture in the state during a meeting between Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and a delegation led by New Zealand High Commissioner Patrick Rata here on Thursday.
The Chief Minister said apple production played an important role in Himachal Pradesh’s economy and the state government was promoting new technology and innovation to strengthen the horticulture sector.
He stressed the need for organising exposure visits for farmers and orchardists from Himachal Pradesh and New Zealand to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and encourage modern practices in apple cultivation.
The Chief Minister also held detailed discussions with the delegation on various aspects of natural farming being promoted in Himachal Pradesh.
The discussions covered opportunities for technical cooperation and sharing of expertise in the horticulture sector.
The New Zealand delegation expressed keen interest in providing technical expertise to promote apple horticulture in Himachal Pradesh. It also made a detailed presentation on the proposed Apple Horticulture Centre of Excellence to be established in the state.
The proposed centre is aimed at facilitating the exchange of technical knowledge and promoting innovation in apple cultivation, with cooperation from New Zealand’s horticulture sector.
The meeting also discussed strengthening collaboration between farmers, orchardists and industry representatives of the two sides.
The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of adopting modern technologies and innovative practices to further develop the state’s horticulture sector.
Mayor, Shimla Municipal Corporation, Surinder Chauhan, Chief Secretary K.K. Pant, New Zealand’s Special Agricultural Trade Envoy Nathan Guy, Counsellor (Primary Industries) at the New Zealand High Commission James Wa, Agriculture Partnership Manager Priyam Arora, and Danielle and Lachlan from New Zealand Apples and Pears were also present on the occasion.
