Himachal seeks special Scouts battalion to strengthen Sino-Indian border security

Shimla, Oct 25 (UNI)Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has urged the union government to raise a dedicated Himachal Scouts Battalion on the lines of the Ladakh Scouts, Sikkim Scouts and Arunachal Pradesh Scouts to strengthen India's defence preparedness along the Sino-Indian border.
The proposed battalion would provide a special recruitment focus for local youth, particularly those from border districts such as Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, who are familiar with the challenging terrain and harsh climatic conditions of high-altitude regions, he maintained.
Sukhu said the specialised force would enhance operational capabilities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), particularly in the difficult mountainous terrain, while strengthening the country's defence preparedness in strategically important border areas.
Highlighting Himachal Pradesh's contribution to the Armed Forces, the Chief Minister said the state was known not only as Dev Bhoomi but also as Veer Bhoomi, with more than one lakh youth serving in the Armed Forces and a similar number of ex-servicemen having contributed to the nation's defence and security.
He said the state's military tradition and the experience of its people in high-altitude areas made a strong case for a dedicated battalion that could draw personnel from the local population.
Recalling the state's legacy of valour and sacrifice, Sukhu said Major Som Nath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, hailed from Himachal Pradesh.
He said the courage, dedication and spirit of sacrifice displayed by Himachal's soldiers had been a matter of immense pride for the state.
"Our soldiers have never hesitated to make the supreme sacrifice for the nation. Himachal Pradesh has produced four Param Vir Chakra awardees, which stands as a testament to the state's rich legacy of courage, patriotism and sacrifice," he said.
The Chief Minister said a dedicated Himachal Scouts Battalion would recognise the state's contribution to national security while providing greater opportunities for local youth, especially those from border regions, to serve in a specialised force suited to the demanding conditions of the Himalayan frontier.
