Himachal selected among best-performing states in Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 3.0

Shimla, Oct 18 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh has been selected among the best-performing states in the larger state category under the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 3.0, with the award scheduled to be presented in New Delhi on October 28, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Sunday.
The Chief Minister credited the achievement to the sustained efforts of the state Health and Family Welfare Department and lauded its role in implementing the campaign aimed at preventing tobacco use among young people and encouraging cessation.
Sukhu said the state's performance had been recognised across several key areas, including public awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco, compliance with tobacco-free educational institution norms, enforcement of tobacco control laws, promotion of tobacco-free villages, social media engagement and capacity building.
The final evaluation was based on the average percentage achieved across these categories, according to the state government.
The Tobacco Free Youth Campaign was launched in 2023 to mark World No Tobacco Day. Its third edition, TFYC 3.0, is a 60-day drive focused on preventing tobacco use among young people and supporting those seeking to quit the habit through six key strategies.
Himachal Pradesh was selected following an assessment by an expert committee, which reviewed the performance of states and union Territories.
At its meeting on April 13, 2026, the committee decided to classify states and union Territories into three categories — larger states, smaller states and union Territories — in accordance with the classification adopted by NITI Aayog.
The recognition highlights the state's efforts to strengthen tobacco control measures through public awareness, institutional compliance and enforcement of relevant legislation.
The campaign also seeks to reinforce tobacco-free environments in educational institutions and villages while expanding outreach through digital platforms and training initiatives.
The state government's focus on these measures is intended to discourage tobacco consumption among young people and promote healthier lifestyles.
The award ceremony in New Delhi on October 28 will formally recognise Himachal Pradesh's performance under the campaign.
