Himachal steps up campus security after university incidents in neighbouring states

Shimla, Oct 12 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh Police on Monday reviewed student safety measures at 17 private universities in the state following recent incidents at universities in neighbouring states, with a focus on strengthening campus security, preventing drug-related activities and improving coordination between police and university administrations.
The meeting, chaired by Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari at Police Headquarters here, was convened in compliance with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s directions to assess existing safety arrangements and take preventive measures to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in Himachal Pradesh.
A presentation on the recent incidents at Lovely Professional University and Chitkara University was made at the outset of the meeting, followed by detailed discussions on campus security, monitoring of entry and exit points, verification of visitors, hostel safety, police verification of private security personnel and their regular training.
The participants stressed the need for effective coordination between university administrations and the police to address students’ concerns promptly and ensure a safe environment on campuses.
It was decided that each university would designate a nodal security officer to maintain regular contact with the concerned district Superintendent of Police.
Joint security audits of university campuses would also be conducted, and clear procedures would be established to respond to emergencies.
The meeting also discussed measures to prevent rumours and misinformation from spreading on social media during incidents. Universities would coordinate with the police Cyber Crime and Media Cells, while each institution would appoint an authorised spokesperson to ensure the timely dissemination of accurate information.
The participants also resolved to strengthen the involvement of universities and students in the state-wide anti-chitta campaign being led by the Chief Minister. T
he police and university administrations would work together to prevent drug-related activities on campuses and in surrounding areas.
Tiwari urged universities to support the traffic volunteer scheme, cyber-safety awareness initiatives and anti-drug campaign, besides making greater use of technology to improve student safety.
He also discussed the possibility of signing memoranda of understanding to institutionalise cooperation between universities and the police.
Highlighting emergency services, the DGP said Himachal Pradesh Police’s emergency response number 112 ranked first nationally. He urged universities to familiarise students, particularly female students, with the service and the ‘Track Me’ facility available for women's safety.
Students were also encouraged to follow the police’s official social media channels for updates and safety information.
The DGP said the objective was to develop systems capable of preventing incidents rather than responding only after something went wrong.
Student safety, mental well-being and protection from drugs and cybercrime were shared responsibilities of the police, educational institutions and the wider community.
He expressed confidence that regular dialogue, mutual trust and coordinated efforts would help create a safer and more disciplined environment at educational institutions across the state.
The police urged students, teachers and university administrations to immediately report emergencies, suspicious activities or security concerns by calling 112.
Senior police officers, including the IG of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, DIGs of the Southern Range and Law and Order, the Commandant of the First Indian Reserve Battalion and the SPs of Solan, Shimla, Mandi, Baddi, Kangra and Una, attended the meeting.
