Hisar police warn uniform sellers of legal action for sales without buyer verification

Hisar, Nov 4 (UNI) Hisar police on Wednesday warned traders selling police and military uniforms of legal action for failing to verify buyers' identities and maintain sales records, citing concerns that criminals could exploit such lapses to impersonate security personnel and commit offences.
Superintendent of Police Siddhant Jain said the warning followed reports that some shops were selling uniforms and related accessories without checking customers' credentials or maintaining transaction records, posing potential risks to public safety and security.
Police have directed all traders dealing in police and military uniforms to verify the identity of every purchaser and maintain detailed records of transactions.
Under the advisory, shopkeepers must record each buyer's name, complete address, mobile number, identity document details and the purpose for which the uniform is being purchased.
Where necessary, sellers must also verify official identity cards or authorisation documents issued by the department concerned before completing a sale.
"Police and military uniforms are not merely clothing but symbols of national security, discipline and constitutional responsibility. Their misuse will not be tolerated under any circumstances," Jain said.
The SP warned that criminals and anti-social elements could misuse police or military uniforms to pose as government officials or security personnel and carry out illegal activities.
Such impersonation, he said, could undermine public confidence in law enforcement agencies and pose serious threats to public safety and law and order.
Police have instructed uniform sellers to preserve purchase and sales records so that they can be examined by investigating officers whenever required.
Shopkeepers have also been directed to exercise particular caution when dealing with suspicious customers and immediately inform police if they suspect that uniforms or related accessories are being purchased for unauthorised purposes.
Jain said negligence in verifying purchasers or violations of applicable rules would invite strict legal action.
Hisar police will monitor shops and commercial establishments dealing in police and military uniforms and conduct inspections in accordance with the law to ensure compliance with the advisory.
The district police said the measures were intended to prevent the misuse of official uniforms, strengthen security arrangements and reduce the possibility of criminals impersonating police officers or military personnel.
Jain appealed to traders and members of the public to cooperate with police and promptly report suspicious purchases or any suspected misuse of police and military uniforms.
He said timely information and vigilance by shopkeepers could help police prevent serious criminal incidents and safeguard public security.
