IIT (BHU), Parul University develop graphene-based nanocomposite to remove toxic dyes from wastewater

Varanasi, Nov 4 (UNI) Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi, and Parul University, Vadodara, have developed an advanced graphene-based nanocomposite for removing toxic dyes from industrial wastewater.
This material successfully removed Eriochrome Black T dye by up to 92.91 per cent under optimised conditions.
The research was conducted jointly by the School of Biochemical Engineering at IIT (BHU) and the Department of Chemical Engineering at Parul University. The research team included Dr Vishal Mishra, Associate Professor at IIT (BHU), along with Alok Tiwari, Gaurang Damle, Dr Vishal Sandhwar, Dr Shivendu Saxena, and Diksha Saxena.
The researchers developed a new material by combining tin oxide, graphene, and the electrically conductive polymer polypyrrole. This nanocomposite, developed through a single-step synthesis process, provides more active sites for absorbing dye molecules.
Eriochrome Black T is a dye used in various industrial processes, including the textile industry, and can persist in the environment for long periods due to its resistance to biological degradation.
The research analysed pH, adsorbent amount, dye concentration, contact time, and temperature using statistical optimisation techniques. The nanocomposite's maximum absorption capacity was recorded at 434.8 mg per gram. Absorption equilibrium was achieved in approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
The material maintained approximately 77 per cent efficiency even after six reuses. However, its efficiency declined during the regeneration process.
The findings have been published in Springer Nature's journal, "Journal of Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers and Materials". This study highlights the potential for developing advanced nanomaterials for effective treatment of industrial wastewater.
