How launching web versions of its popular tools helped SoftOrbits increase desktop downloads

SoftOrbits is an image editing software development company created in 2006 by Eugene Ustinenkov. Today it boasts over a million yearly downloads and 300,000 users, and the team’s recent decision to launch web versions of 10 of its most popular utilities has done a lot to help it reach these high numbers.

As a software provider, SoftOrbits was always focused on delivering small single-feature solutions that help users deal with routine, tedious, and boring tasks, enabling artists and photographers to focus on more creative aspects of their work. Although downloadable utilities sold well and were highly successful in their own right, online versions of these tools have expanded the company’s reach and enabled SoftOrbits to attract new customers and diversify its audience.

“Our corporate clients still prefer downloadable solutions since they are going to work with these tools on an everyday basis. However, lots of individual users show high interest in our online utilities due to their convenience. Some companies like to focus on one version of their solution, but we believe that both of them have their strengths and limitations and providing customers with this kind of choice further increases accessibility, which is one of the core features we put a huge emphasis on,” says Eugene Ustinenkov, CEO of SoftOrbits and AlarmFront.

According to Eugene, since the team introduced its online tools, the downloads for desktop versions have increased by around 20%, which is a massive success. The team behind the company believes that they were able to achieve these results due to the fact that online tools have a high potential for reaching new markets and appealing to a larger user base, and some of these users eventually decide to stick with the desktop version of their favorite utility.

“This goes to show how impactful diversified distribution models can be. This hybrid approach has brought us nothing but wins down the road, so we will double down on it for the future, working on both fronts and making every single one of our solutions even more accessible and easy to use,” says Eugene Ustinenkov, CEO of SoftOrbits, Candidate of Technical Sciences.

What that means is that SoftOrbits intends to implement the latest AI functionalities into most of its applications, especially focusing on repetitive and technically demanding tasks, not image generation, enabling artists to express themselves in a more comfortable way rather than trying to replace their work.

“We have already launched multiple AI features like this, and all of them were received positively despite the general negative PR surrounding the technology in the image-editing industry. Our goal is to use the potential of prompt-based editing and natural language recognition to show how AI tools can make artists’ and photographers’ work easier without undermining their creativity in any way,” says Hannes Jansen, writer and editor at SoftOrbits.
