HP: Scorching heat forces change in school timings across six districts

Shimla, June 14 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh battles an unrelenting heatwave; the Directorate of School Education has revised school timings for summer-closing schools in six districts — Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN area) in Solan, and Paonta Sahib and Nahan in Sirmaur — where temperatures are soaring up to 45°C.
The official order issued by Director of School Education Ashish Kohli reads, “Keeping in view the harsh weather conditions and ongoing heat waves, it is directed that the school timings for students/teachers be adjusted from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM, if required.”
The order, dated June 13, further urges deputy directors to follow any prior instructions issued under the Disaster Management Act by the respective deputy commissioners or SDMs.
The decision follows meteorological warnings and persistent reports from School Management Committees (SMCs), Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and parents, expressing concern over student safety as the mercury breached 43°C in Una and hovered around 39–40°C in districts like Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kangra.
The directive also advises shortening morning assemblies and prohibiting outdoor play during peak heat hours to protect students from heat stress. Schools have been instructed to provide “two additional water breaks to ensure that students remain well-hydrated during these adverse and harsh hot weather conditions”.
Meteorological data from June 12 recorded Una at 43.0°C, Bilaspur at 39.8°C, Hamirpur at 39.0°C, and Sundernagar at 37.9°C, with most districts reporting temperature departures 3–5°C above normal.
With no significant dip expected in temperatures, the state education department has asked all concerned officials to “intimate the changed timetable to this Directorate immediately.”
The situation remains grim as the heatwave continues to grip low-lying and mid-hill districts. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation while urging precautionary steps to safeguard student well-being.
