HUL, Telangana Govt Partner to Expand Suvidha Sanitation Model Across State

Hyderabad, Sept 28 (UNI): The Telangana government and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) have partnered to expand the Suvidha social innovation model across urban local bodies in the state to improve access to hygiene and sanitation facilities.
Under the partnership, HUL will serve as the knowledge and design partner, providing technical expertise, operational insights and behaviour-change strategies gained through its Suvidha initiative in Mumbai, the company said in a release on Monday.
The state government will use these learnings to establish and operate similar centres across Telangana.
Launched in Mumbai in 2016, Suvidha provides clean toilets, safe drinking water, showers and laundry facilities under one roof.
The centres operate round the clock and have expanded to 25 locations, serving more than six lakh people annually in partnership with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, HSBC India and JSW Foundation.
According to HUL, the centres have recorded more than 10 crore service uses over the past decade, with a user satisfaction rate of 95 per cent.
Independent assessments indicate that households using the facilities benefit by more than Rs 33,500 annually through time savings and reduced medical expenses. Users have also reported a 50 per cent reduction in diarrhoeal incidence.
T.K. Sreedevi, Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration, Government of Telangana, said the partnership would build on the state's existing collaboration with HUL in areas such as women's empowerment, health and hygiene.
With HUL serving as the knowledge and design partner, the government aims to develop accessible and high-quality sanitation facilities that uphold dignity and improve living conditions in urban communities, she said.
B.P. Biddappa, Executive Director and Chief People, Transformation and Sustainability Officer at HUL, said the company was pleased to work with the Telangana government to scale the Suvidha model through public-private collaboration.
He said the initiative was based on the principle that everyone deserves access to clean, safe and dignified hygiene services, adding that human-centred design, community participation and sustainable operations were central to the model.
The Suvidha framework has also been incorporated into an open toolkit and adopted nationally in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Centre for Hygiene and Sanitation Excellence.
The partnership marks a further step towards expanding access to public hygiene infrastructure through collaboration between the government and the private sector.
