Hyd: GIZ, PepsiCo and Bayer launch HARVEST programme to promote climate-resilient maize farming

Hyderabad, Nov 4 (UNI) The German development agency GIZ, PepsiCo India and Bayer AG jointly launched a three-year public-private partnership programme on Wednesday to promote regenerative agriculture and strengthen climate resilience among maize farmers in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
The initiative, titled HARVEST (Holistic Agricultural Climate Resilience and Versatile Ecosystem Strengthening Techniques), aims to reach 35,000 farmers through training, capacity building and sustainable farming interventions.
Implemented under the develoPPP programme on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the project will focus on improving soil health, efficient use of water and agricultural inputs, crop diversification and adoption of farming practices to address climate-related risks.
The programme will combine scientific research, demonstration farms, farmer-to-farmer learning and value-chain partnerships to encourage the adoption of locally suitable regenerative agricultural practices.
The Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR) and other research and government institutions will provide technical and research support to develop locally adapted farming recommendations based on soil and water assessments.
The initiative will also strengthen the capabilities of public extension services, agronomists and farm leaders to help expand the adoption of sustainable farming practices.
GIZ India and Bhutan Country Director Ulrike Ebeling said the partnership brought together GIZ's experience and local networks with the innovation and expertise of PepsiCo and Bayer to improve farmers' livelihoods and build sustainable agricultural value chains.
PepsiCo India Senior Director and India Market Supply Officer Ashok Rai said the company was extending its experience in sustainable potato farming to maize cultivation through the initiative, in line with its pep and Positive Agriculture agenda.
Bayer Crop Science's Country Divisional Head for India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka Simon Wiebusch said collaboration among organisations was essential to scaling regenerative agriculture while ensuring economic benefits for farmers.
The partnership builds on the experience of PepsiCo and Bayer in the potato value chain and PepsiCo and GIZ's collaboration in Thailand between 2021 and 2025 on potato and rice value chains.
Maize is an important crop for food, animal feed and industrial applications in India. However, erratic rainfall, drought, rising temperatures and pressure on natural resources are increasing production risks for farmers.
The HARVEST programme aims to demonstrate how regenerative agricultural practices, stronger farmer capabilities and improved market linkages can contribute to healthier soils, efficient resource use and more resilient farming systems.
