Hyd: Insulin pump technology improves diabetes management in 14-year-old at KIMS Cuddles

Hyderabad, Oct 16 (UNI) Advanced insulin pump technology has helped a 14-year-old boy with Type 1 diabetes improve his glucose control and gain greater independence in daily life, reducing the treatment burden on him and his family, according to doctors at KIMS Cuddles, Secunderabad, here on Friday.
Prahasith, from the Warangal region, who has been living with Type 1 diabetes since early childhood, was treated with the Medtronic MiniMed 780G hybrid closed-loop insulin pump system integrated with the Guardian 4 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensor.
The technology has helped him manage his condition while participating more comfortably in school activities and social gatherings, his treating doctor said.
Dr. Kishore Baske, Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist, Diabetologist and Insulin Pump Specialist, said the boy had previously depended on multiple daily insulin injections and frequent blood glucose monitoring.
The demanding treatment schedule, coupled with concerns over potentially dangerous drops in glucose levels during the night, had placed considerable physical and emotional stress on the child and his family.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, making lifelong insulin replacement essential.
Regular glucose monitoring and medical supervision are necessary to manage the condition and reduce the risk of complications.
Children with Type 1 diabetes may require four to six insulin injections a day, along with frequent glucose checks, Dr. Baske said, noting that parents often wake up at night to monitor their children's glucose levels.
The MiniMed 780G system continuously tracks glucose levels and automatically adjusts insulin delivery based on sensor readings and an in-built algorithm.
The system is designed to help users spend more time within their target glucose range and reduce the need for frequent manual insulin adjustments. However, users must continue to monitor their condition, respond to alerts and follow prescribed treatment protocols.
According to Dr. Baske, Prahasith showed significant improvement in glucose control within a few months of starting pump therapy.
The technology also offered greater flexibility in his daily routine, enabling him to participate in school activities, family gatherings and overnight stays with friends with fewer disruptions from his treatment schedule.
The continuous monitoring and automated insulin adjustments also helped ease his family's anxiety over fluctuations in blood glucose levels, he said, adding that outcomes vary depending on individual responses and consistent use of the system.
Prahasith's family said the treatment had brought a positive change to their everyday lives, reducing the constant concern over food, activities and nighttime glucose levels while helping the boy become more independent.
Dr. Baske stressed that proper training and regular medical follow-up were essential for the safe and effective use of insulin pump systems.
Families must understand device operation, respond to alerts and replace infusion sets and sensors at the recommended intervals.
"The goal is not merely to control blood glucose levels. It is equally important to ensure that children can pursue their ambitions, develop confidence and grow without diabetes becoming a barrier to their lives," he said.
He added that advances in diabetes technology, combined with personalised care and medical supervision, were helping children with Type 1 diabetes manage their condition more effectively and improve their quality of life.
