Hyd:Stroke Cases Increasing Among Younger People: KIMS Doctor

Hyderabad, Oct 28 (UNI) Brain stroke cases are increasingly being reported among younger and middle-aged people, underscoring the need for greater awareness of risk factors and early symptoms, a senior neurologist at KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur, said on Wednesday.
Dr K S V Surya Teja Reddy, Chief Consultant and Interventional Neuroradiologist, said around 15 stroke patients were seen in the hospital’s outpatient department every month, including a considerable number of middle-aged individuals.
Ahead of World Stroke Day on October 29, he stressed that prompt recognition of symptoms and immediate medical attention were crucial to prevent brain damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability.
The message for World Stroke Day, “Every Minute Counts”, highlights the importance of timely treatment, as brain cells begin to suffer damage rapidly when their blood supply is interrupted.
Global estimates indicate that approximately one in four people aged 25 and above may experience a stroke during their lifetime.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked or ruptures, causing bleeding.
The two types are known as ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes.
Symptoms may include sudden weakness on one side of the body, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, vision problems and loss of balance.
Treatment depends on the type of stroke, the time since symptoms began and the patient’s condition, he said. Intravenous thrombolysis may be used to dissolve a blood clot, while mechanical thrombectomy can remove a clot from a blocked blood vessel in appropriately selected patients. Both treatments are time-sensitive and require assessment by specialists.
Dr Reddy identified high blood pressure as a major modifiable risk factor for stroke.
Diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, tobacco use and certain heart conditions, particularly atrial fibrillation, can also increase the risk. Uncontrolled hypertension, aneurysms and other blood vessel abnormalities may cause bleeding in the brain, he said.
Although stroke risk generally increases with age, younger adults are also vulnerable. Sedentary lifestyles, physical inactivity, obesity, inadequate sleep and unhealthy dietary habits can contribute to conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, which raise the risk of stroke, said Dr Reddy.
Some younger patients may require further investigations to establish the underlying cause, he said.
He advised people to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels regularly, stop smoking, avoid tobacco, follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight and take prescribed medicines for existing conditions.
Explaining the BE FAST method of recognising stroke symptoms, he said the letters stand for sudden loss of' Balance, changes in Eyesight, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty and Time to seek emergency medical assistance.
Anyone experiencing these symptoms should be taken to a hospital immediately, he said.
The time of symptom onset should be noted to help doctors determine suitable treatment. Even if symptoms disappear within minutes, urgent medical evaluation is necessary, as they could indicate a transient ischaemic attack and warn of a possible major stroke, he said
He cautioned against giving aspirin or other medicines without medical advice, as medication could worsen the condition in cases involving bleeding in the brain.
Greater public awareness, regular health checks and timely treatment of risk factors are essential to preventing strokes and reducing their long-term impact, he added.
