Hyderabad police warn against WhatsApp scam that allegedly drains bank accounts after ‘NO’ reply

Hyderabad, Oct 12 (UNI) Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar on Monday warned the public about a new cyber fraud in which criminals allegedly drain victims’ bank accounts by exploiting WhatsApp messages, without requiring them to share OTPs or click on suspicious links.
Explaining the modus operandi, Sajjanar said fraudsters send messages from unknown or international numbers claiming that money has been debited from the recipient’s bank account. A follow-up message urges the recipient to reply “NO” if the transaction was not authorised. He cautioned that responding could expose victims to malicious software and cyberattacks, although the exact technical mechanism would depend on the case.
Citing an incident in which a chartered accountant reportedly lost lakhs of rupees, the Commissioner advised people not to respond to such messages. Instead, they should block the sender, delete the message and verify transactions directly through their bank’s official mobile application or net banking portal.
He stressed that customers should contact banks only through verified customer care numbers available on their passbooks or debit cards and remain alert to messages designed to create panic.
Sajjanar urged victims of cyber fraud to immediately call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or lodge a complaint at https://cybercrime.gov.in. Prompt reporting, particularly within the first hour, could help authorities and banks take steps to freeze suspicious transactions and prevent further loss, he said.
