Indian seafarer killed, 13 rescued after vessel struck off Oman; India urges de-escalation

New Delhi, Nov 3 (UNI) An Indian seafarer was killed, and 13 others were rescued safely after an Indian-flagged vessel came under an aerial attack off Oman's coast, triggering strong condemnation from New Delhi, which warned that repeated strikes on commercial shipping threaten maritime security and called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region.
The vessel, MSV Al Jusufi, was carrying 14 Indian nationals when it was hit on November 2. The Omani Coast Guard rescued 13 crew members, while one seafarer died of injuries sustained in the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal identified the dead man as Gandhar Nahim Ajij, from the western state of Gujarat, in a post on X.
“I am deeply saddened to report that one of our seafarers... tragically succumbed to his injuries,” Sonowal said.
Sonowal said his ministry and the Indian Embassy in Oman are in touch with local authorities to assist the survivors and arrange the return of the rescued crew and the body of the deceased.
It is not immediately clear who was responsible for the strike. The government has not said what type of object hit the vessel.
The MEA “strongly condemned” the attack and said the embassy is coordinating with Omani authorities on the repatriations.
"We convey our deepest condolences on the precious life lost," the ministry said.
In a statement, the MEA strongly condemned the attack and said the Indian Embassy in Oman was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities to facilitate the early repatriation of the 13 rescued Indian nationals and the mortal remains of the deceased.
In a statement, the MEA strongly condemned the attack and expressed serious concern over continuing incidents targeting commercial shipping in the region.
"We reiterate our call for immediate de-escalation of tensions and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region."
“The targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end,” the ministry said, adding that free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways must be restored at the earliest, in accordance with international law.
