Innovative design should be the key to drive next level of engineering exports: Top official

Kolkata, July 2 (UNI) India’s engineering sector should focus on design as a key differentiator to drive the next level of growth in exports, according to joint secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Vimal Anand.
"To unlock the next phase of growth and achieve our ambitious export targets, we must move beyond cost competitiveness alone. The global buyer today seeks not only functionality and price, but also user experience, sustainability, aesthetics, and intelligent solutions. This is where design plays an indispensable role," he said while addressing a seminar on Design Interventions for Engineering Exports.
Anand noted that the government was actively promoting a design-led manufacturing ecosystem through various policy interventions.
Regional chairman (Northern Region), EEPC India Pradeep Kumar Aggarwal said, "Thoughtful design can play an important role in elevating the quality, appeal, and competitiveness of our engineering products. In today's dynamic global landscape, it is no longer enough to just produce goods; we must craft experiences.”
The seminar, held today by EEPC India, sought to bridge the gap between engineering capabilities and design sensibilities, fostering a dialogue that will hopefully lead to actionable strategies and groundbreaking solutions.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ashok Mondal, Director of the National Institute of Design, stated that India’s rising trade deficit necessitates urgent design-led innovation in engineering exports.
"By integrating design into manufacturing, we can enhance product value, global competitiveness, and customer satisfaction. The National Institute of Design, along with IDC and EEPC, is committed to empowering exporters through design expertise and policy support. It's time to make 'Designed in India' a mark of global excellence," he said.
