Situation along inter-state border with Assam peaceful: Meghalaya Dy CM

Shillong, July 2 (UNI) Noting that the situation along the inter-state border with Assam is peaceful, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today said efforts are being made to improve the situation in Lapangap village.
Lapangap village under Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district bordering Assam’s Karbi Anglong district made headlines recently after tribal Pnar villagers uprooted saplings planted by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) without authorisation, as the Meghalaya and Assam governments have agreed on a status quo on developmental activities in the area.
“The situation (in Lapangap) is improving and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will take up the issue with his Assam counterpart (Himanta Biswa Sarma to further resolve any outstanding matters,” Tynsong said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said a temporary police camp has been set up in Lapangap with around 30 police personnel working 24/7 to ensure peace and security in the area.
Similarly, the Assam government has deployed an equal number of its police personnel on their side of the border, Tynsong said.
\\\\\\\\When asked if government proposed to set up a permanent police camp in Lapangap village, the Deputy Chief Minister said, the possibility of converting the temporary camp into a permanent camp would be examined once the situation calms down and becomes conducive.
“For now, the temporary camp is aimed at addressing the immediate security concerns in the area,” Tynsong said. UNI RRK SSP
