Insomnium: 'Netherworlds' review – Misery made beautiful!

By Anand Venkitachalam
New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) Insomnium, the Finnish masters of melodic death metal and heart wrenching doom, melancholy, and sorrow are back with their tenth album ‘Netherworlds’.
Coming after a span of three years, Insomnium have released what is arguably their most catchy release yet, second perhaps only to their previous LP ‘Anno 1696’ with a sound that is all too familiar and yet never boring or stale.
Over three decades in existence, at this point in their career, Insomnium have crafted a reputation in the metal community for delivering doom tinged melodeath with thrashy riffs, with an atmosphere that is cold and dark and that is exactly what ‘Netherworlds’ delivers.
After opening with a rather cold and morose intro that is ‘The Cold Song’, Insomnium then dish out their classic signature style of furious riffs, blast beats, haunting atmosphere, and passionate demonic death growls in ‘Shadowlife’, and continue with that tone in ‘Remembrance’, really giving that vibe of loneliness, oak trees in the distance, and walking alone in a forest with a heavy heart.
The centerpiece of the album is ‘The Hour Grows Late’ featuring Amorphis singer Tomi Joutsen on the clean vocals, and it is absolutely majestic.
Following that is what is probably the catchiest track in this album, ‘Arch in the Sky’ which just screams pure energy!
After continuing in that same energy and vibe on ‘Pathways of the Night’, we suddenly hit pure gloom in ‘Ethereal Sleep’, which breaks away from these two fast burners into a slow-paced doom tinged, and almost haunting song with a very beautifully melancholic atmosphere.
Then just after going all-in on that doom metal energy, Insomnium go full thrash in ‘The Banished’. But the tempo change isn’t sudden, and rather suits the whole vibe of the album, and just feels very natural.
Seriously, Insomnium needs more thrash in their discography because it is pure harrowing energy. And then we hit the album closer aptly titled ‘Journey’s End’, which does full justice to its namesake, making you feel like life has come to an end, almost playing out like some kind of funeral epic with it sweet acoustic overtones.
No exaggeration, it is genuinely that miserable and one of the best album closers in any album, and the best song here.
Totalling over 54 minutes, not once does ‘Netherworlds’ feel like it is even a minute longer than it should be. Every song here just gels in naturally, serving to complement the other, playing to its strengths.
Featuring strong harrowing melodies, a soulful, yet freezing gothic atmosphere, and pure unadulterated passion marked with fury and mellowness, ‘Netherworlds’ is burning fire which delivers a sound that is cold yet untamed, and sweeps you into distant horizons of longing and despair! Score: 10/10
