Iran will target US ships across Indian Ocean in new war: IRGC commander

Tehran, Sep 27 (UNI) Iran will target US warships and destroyers across the Indian Ocean if Washington launches another war against the Islamic Republic, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has warned.
Ali Mohammadi, deputy for political affairs of the IRGC Navy, made the remarks in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, as tensions remain high over the Strait of Hormuz and US military operations against Iran.
“If another war breaks out, we will undoubtedly attack and strike their vessels and destroyers, even in the Indian Ocean,” Mohammadi said.
His warning came after US President Donald Trump rejected a seven-day proposal from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has also claimed that the United States already has “total control” of the Strait, a crucial global energy chokepoint through which a significant share of the world's oil supplies passes.
Mohammadi said vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman were under constant surveillance by the IRGC Navy, disputing claims regarding the movement of oil tankers through the waterway.
“If the United States claims to control the Strait of Hormuz, let it bring one of its warships into the area,” he said.
“If Trump considers the Strait of Hormuz his own, then why aren’t his warships and vessels here?” Mohammadi asked, referring to a post by Trump on his Truth Social platform that featured a map of the waterway labelled “Trump Strait”.
The IRGC commander also said Iran's armed forces were prepared to respond to any potential hostile action, adding that they had adopted new tactics, equipment and operational methods to deal with possible threats.
He said developments in West Asia would eventually lead to a reduction in the military presence of foreign powers and contribute to the goal of a Persian Gulf free of what he described as hegemonic powers.
Separately, the IRGC Navy said a Togo-flagged oil tanker, the Trend, was struck and brought to a halt after a fire broke out on board while it was attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran restricted transit through the Strait following the US-Israeli military offensive that began on February 28.
Moreover, Tehran and Washington subsequently signed a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding on June 17.
According to the Iranian account, Article 5 of the agreement placed responsibility for reopening and managing the Strait with Iran.
Iran has accused Washington of subsequently seeking to undermine its control over the waterway, resuming airstrikes and imposing a naval blockade. Tehran said those actions prompted it to declare the Strait closed to all traffic.
Mohammadi also said the United States has increasingly relied on aerial surveillance after Iranian forces shot down US drones and targeted military bases and radar systems in the region during retaliatory strikes.
“Past confrontations have demonstrated that any power that has engaged in hostilities against the Iranian nation has incurred significant costs,” he said. UNI AAB SAS
