Cannes, May 24 (UNI) Iranian director Jafar Panahi today won the Palme d'Or for 'It Was Just An Accident', a haunting reflection of a young generation's seething anger against a repressive regime, at the 78th Cannes film festival.
Celebrated French actor Julitte Binoche, the president of the competition jury, which included Mumbai-born filmmaker Payal Kapadia, announced the winner of the festival's top honour at a glittering closing ceremony tonight.
There was no Indian film in the prestigious competition section of the Cannes festival this year.
Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' won the Grand Prix, the festival's second-biggest award last year.
Among the 22 films vying for the Palme d'Or this year were American filmmaker Kelly Reichardt's 'The Mastermind', compatriot Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme' and Japanese filmmaker Chie Hayakawa's 'Renoir'.
It is the first Palme d'Or award for Panahi, winner of top honours at Berlin and Venice film festivals before.
American independent filmmaker Sean Baker's 'Anora', won the Palme d'Or last year.
The Grand Prix, the second biggest prize after the Palme d'Or, was won by Danish director Joachim Trier's 'Sentimental Value'.
The Jury Prize was shared by Spanish director Olivier Laxe for 'Sirat', about a father searching for his missing daughter in the expansive desert on the Spanish-Morocco border, and German film 'Sound of Falling' by Mascha Schilinski, a searing exploration of violence inside families in a story straddling generations from the years following the First World War.
The Best Direction prize was bagged by Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho for 'The Secret Agent', the story of hunting down Communist leaders in Brazil during the military regime in the 1980s.
Brazilian-born actor Wagner Moura was adjudged the Best Actor for his role as a Communist activist on the run in the Brazilian film, 'The Secret Agent'.
French actor Nadia Melliti won the Best Actress award for her performance as a teenage student in 'The Little Sister' directed by Hafsia Herzi.
The award for the Best Screenplay was bagged by 'Young Mothers' by Belgian filmmaker-brothers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne.
Chinese film, 'Resurrection' directed by Bi Gan won a Jury Special Prize.
The Camera d'Or award for the Best First Feature Film of a director went to 'The President’s Cake' by Iraqi director Hasan Hadi, which was part of the Directors' Fortnight parallel programme.
Nigerian film, 'My Father’s Shadow', by Akinola Davies Jr won a Special Mention from the Camera d'Or jury.
The Palme d'or for the Best Short Film was won by 'I’m Glad You’re Dead Now' by Palestinian actor-director Tawfeek Barhom.
