Iranian FM Abbas Aragchi due to meet Qatari mediators in New York

Tehran, Sep 28 (UNI) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi is due to meet Qatari representatives in New York on Monday, amid Tehran's bid to end the war and forward its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The meeting, to be held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly according to Iranian state media, is expected to focus on the latest messages exchanged between Iran and the US through mediators.
Iranian media reported that Aragchi and his delegation would meet mediators to review recent developments and exchange views.
The talks come after Iran submitted a seven-day proposal to the US through intermediaries, offering to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations towards a broader agreement if Washington met a series of conditions.
Iran has said it is still awaiting an official US response through the mediators.
There had been speculation that Aragchi could extend his stay in New York to facilitate further negotiations, but Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said his visit had not been extended.
US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said on Sunday that he expected further contacts with Iran this week despite rejecting Tehran's latest proposal.
"I expect more talks with Iran [this week]. They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make," Trump told Axios.
He added that Iran had "overplayed their hand". Trump also said he was "always thinking about" the possibility of resuming US strikes against Iran.
Trump said the US military was facilitating the movement of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and claimed more than 20 million barrels had passed through the waterway over the weekend.
A US defence official subsequently told Axios that 22 million barrels of oil were exported through the strait on Friday night.
Aragchi defended Tehran's seven-day proposal, saying the Islamic Republic was prepared to take steps within several days that would allow the strait to be reopened, after which talks on a final agreement could resume.
"We want our money, our goods that are illegally seized. We want to be able to sell our oil. We want certain things that the United States has already promised in previous agreements," he said.
Aragchi described the proposal as "a very reasonable plan" and said that if Washington rejected it without explanation, responsibility would lie with the US.
He added that Iran had heard Trump was rejecting the proposal but was still waiting for a formal response through mediators.
The proposal, presented on Friday, is based on a memorandum of understanding reached in Islamabad and calls for an end to hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
Iran has said reopening Hormuz would follow US steps including easing military pressure and lifting its blockade on Iranian ports.
Qatar has been involved in the indirect diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, with its mediators continuing to relay messages between the two sides.
Axios reported that Qatari officials were expected to meet Aragchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff separately as early as Monday as efforts continued to modify the Iranian proposal.
