Israel marks third anniversary of Oct 7 terror attack, Netanyahu vows revenge amid demand for accountability

Jerusalem, Oct 5 (UNI) As Israel marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led terror attack on October 7, 2023 on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to pursue the perpetrators to the ends of the earth, though others, including the President, called for greater accountability on the security failures that preceded the assault.
The national day of remembrance, observed according to the Hebrew calendar, fell this year on October 5, corresponding to Tishrei 24, two days after the Simchat Torah holiday during which the attack took place.
As a sign of mourning, flags were lowered to half-staff at the Knesset and the President's Residence. Two state ceremonies were held at Mount Herzl military cemetery, one honouring soldiers killed in the subsequent war and another commemorating civilians killed in the October 7 attack.
While Netanyahu threatened Israel's regional enemies and criticised international leaders who have condemned Israel's actions during the Gaza war, officials such as President Isaac Herzog and IDF Chief of Staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, instead called for accountability and a full investigation into the security lapses surrounding the attack.
The question of how those failures should be investigated remain a politically polarising matter as Netanyahu has rejected calls for a state commission of inquiry, Israel's highest investigative body, and instead backed a politically led investigation.
Herzog also warned against further polarisation as Israel approaches its October 27 election.
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid did not attend the state ceremonies, saying he did not want to appear alongside members of the government who, according to Hebrew reports, had "refused to take responsibility, blamed IDF commanders and refused to establish a state commission of inquiry". Lapid is expected to attend a separate memorial organised by families of the victims.
Speaking at the ceremony for fallen soldiers, Netanyahu pledged to continue pursuing those involved in the October 7 attack and other attacks against Israel.
"In Gaza there will not be any Hamas rule," he vowed. "Everyone who was involved in the attack against us, everyone who held our hostages, is living on borrowed time."
"The October 7 massacre in the Gaza border area exposed the monstrous evil of our enemies to the entire world," Netanyahu recounted. "Infants and children, adults and the elderly, were targeted for extermination, abuse and abduction."
Families of hostages have disputed that characterisation, arguing that the government missed earlier opportunities to secure their release and save some of those who died in captivity.
"At the same time, we waged an intense war against our attackers across seven fronts," Netanyahu said, highlighting Israel's military campaigns against Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and other enemies.
