ISRO plans to launch Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035: Dr. Narayanan

Bhubaneswar, May 22 (UNI) The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to launch the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), a modular space station, by 2035, announced ISRO Chairman and Secretary of the Department of Space, Dr. V. Narayanan.
Dr. Narayanan shared this vision during an interaction with students, researchers, and faculty members at Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (Deemed to be University) in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.
He emphasized that the launch of BAS would significantly boost India's presence in space research and promote advancements in space technology.
He also revealed that India’s first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan, is expected to be launched in March 2027.
Four test pilots are currently undergoing astronaut training for this mission. Before the crewed flight, a series of uncrewed missions will be launched to test critical systems.
India aims to become a global space power by 2047, Dr. Narayanan stated, noting that so far, only Russia, the United States, and China have independently sent humans into space.
Dr. Narayanan, a rocket propulsion expert, reflected on India’s journey in space exploration. Although India’s space program began in 1962, it has made tremendous technological progress. ISRO, established in 1969, achieved its first satellite launch in 1980, placing a 35 kg satellite in orbit.
"Since then," he said, "India has developed six generations of launch vehicles and set a record by designing a 40-storey-high rocket in just 27 days."
Recalling past challenges, Dr. Narayanan said India was once mocked and denied access to cryogenic engine technology. However, the country has since developed three such engines, two of which are fully indigenous.
He highlighted several of ISRO’s historic achievements, including the soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the Moon’s south pole—making India the only country to do so—and the discovery of water molecules on the lunar surface. India also set a world record by deploying over 100 satellites in a single mission.
Dr. Narayanan noted that India remains the only nation to have successfully entered Mars’ orbit on its first attempt.
Looking ahead, he said Chandrayaan-4 will be a complex mission aimed at bringing lunar samples back to Earth, while Chandrayaan-5 is planned as a collaborative mission with Japan.
Among ISRO’s notable achievements is the successful completion of a satellite docking experiment conducted on January 16, 2025. The docking was executed with remarkable precision while the satellites were traveling at a speed of 28,400 km/h. This was followed by a successful undocking experiment conducted in a circular orbit.
