J&K: Shuttlers elated as facelift of badminton hall gets underway at Jammu’s MA Stadium

Jammu, Oct 8 (UNI) Shuttlers are elated as the facelift of the decades-old badminton hall, which was in shambles, has begun at the Old Indoor Complex of Maulana Azad Stadium here.
According to officials of the engineering wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council, the hall is being repaired under the Flood Restoration and Reconstruction Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) Scheme.
“The nearly four decades-old badminton hall, including its courts, walls and ceiling, badly needed repairs as it had turned into an injury-prone facility,” said sources.
They said that water leakage from the roof and inadequate infrastructure had rendered the facility unsuitable for regular training.
“The floods last year caused damage to the hall as water gushed into the stadium premises, submerging most of its portion,” they said, adding that the courts were completely damaged, the flooring was uprooted and the facility remained unsafe for players.
Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), Public Works Department, J&K Sports Council, Sudhir Kumar, when contacted, said, “The repair work of the badminton hall is already underway.”
“The hall is getting a facelift and the project, worth Rs 2.39 crore, has to be completed in four months,” said the AEE.
He said that the repairs included roofing, and added: “A soundproof waffle ceiling, maple wood flooring, seating chairs, lighting and fans are also to be added as part of the facelift.”
Around 200 players across all age groups practise daily at the badminton hall and have expressed hope that the upgraded facility will be safe and provide standard training conditions.
