Jai Ram Thakur credits Centre, successive governments for Himachal's BBMB victory

Shimla, Nov 6 (UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Friday congratulated the people of the state on the Supreme Court verdict ensuring Himachal's rights in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and thanked the apex court and the Centre for their role in resolving the three-decade-old dispute.
In a statement issued here, Thakur said successive state governments over the past 30 years had strongly presented Himachal's case and fought for its rightful share. The Supreme Court had ruled in Himachal's favour in 2011, but the states concerned had not agreed to the decision, and successive governments could not arrive at a mutually acceptable formula to resolve the dispute, he said.
He said the Centre proposed a cashless settlement formula on July 30, 2026, and made efforts to build consensus among the states concerned, paving the way for the latest decision in Himachal's favour.
Thakur said the Centre had consistently safeguarded the state's interests while working towards a settlement. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for resolving several long-pending inter-state water disputes through strategic initiatives and political acumen.
Referring to the financial settlement, the Leader of Opposition said the states concerned had sought 30 years to clear the outstanding dues payable to Himachal, while the Centre continued its efforts to resolve the issue. Following these efforts, the Supreme Court had fixed a 20-year timeframe for payment of the entire outstanding amount to the state, he said.
However, Thakur criticised Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for allegedly trying to take political credit for a victory achieved through a collective effort spanning three decades.
Several governments had worked to protect Himachal's interests during this prolonged legal and administrative battle, and the latest verdict was the outcome of their combined efforts, he said.
Describing the judgment as a moment of immense pride and satisfaction for the state, Thakur said the achievement should be celebrated collectively rather than being turned into a political controversy.
