Jan Sangh was formed to end monopoly of Congress in politics: Khattar speaks on Emergency

Patna, June 24 (UNI) Union Minister and senior BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar today said the Jan Sangh was formed to counter the monopoly of Congress in politics.
Khattar, while addressing a function organised on the theme "Emergency: a black chapter of democracy", said that the Jan Sangh was formed to provide a strong political alternative to Congress in the democratic structure of the country. People were fed up with the monopoly of Congress and they had then no other option to choose, and in that prevailing scenario Jan Sangh was formed, he pointed out.
"For the first time in the post independence era, people had understood the importance that government could be changed using the rights enshrined in the Constitution under the democratic structure of the country," Khattar said, adding that then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had given the slogan of 'Garibi Hatao', which proved to be a total flop. Poverty did not alleviate but Congress continued to get votes by befooling the people in the name of reducing poverty, he added.
Congress had imposed Emergency in 1975, suppressing the voice of the masses and put behind bars all top opposition leaders of the country. Even press was not spared and journalists were forced to suffer all kinds of torture and humiliation during the dark era of Emergency, he recalled.
Khattar said that people had understood the true face of Congress on so many occasions in history and they could not be befooled by the party again. It was time for the people to think wisely and take decisions in favour of those who were really concerned for them, he added.
