Jennifer Lawrence opens up about postpartum struggles while promoting 'Die, My Love' at Cannes

Cannes, May 18 (UNI) American actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of postpartum isolation following the birth of her first child, drawing a personal connection to her latest role in "Die, My Love", which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

The 34-year-old actress, who recently welcomed her second child with husband Cooke Maroney, revealed that she had just given birth to her first child, Cy, when she was offered the film.

"I had just read my first (baby). And there's not really anything like postpartum. It's extremely isolating, which is so interesting when Lynn (Ramsay) moves this couple into Montana."

"She doesn't have a community. She doesn't have her people. But the truth is, extreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolated, no matter where you are. You feel like an alien. And so, it deeply moved me. I wanted to work with Lynn Ramsey since I saw Rat Catcher," she confessed.

The film, directed by Lynne Ramsay and based on Ariana Harwicz's 2017 novel of the same name, blends horror and absurdity to chart Grace's psychological decline. The star admitted that since having children, it has changed her perspective on her career and described motherhood as "brutal and incredible".

She added: "Well, having children changes everything. It changes your whole life. But it's brutal and incredible. And so not only do they go into every decision of if I'm working, where I'm working, when I'm working. It taught me... I didn't know that I could feel so much. My job has a lot to do with emotion. They've opened up the world to me. It's almost like feeling like a blister or something, so sensitive. So, they've changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they've changed me creatively. I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor."

Robert Pattinson and Lawrence shared the screen for the very first time, the former became a father last year with fiancée Suki Waterhouse, echoed Lawrence's sentiments. 'I think in the most unexpected way, having a baby gives you the biggest trove of energy and inspiration'.

"Ever since she was born, it's reintegrated the way I approach work...," he remarked.

This marks Lawrence's first public appearance since the birth of her second child earlier this year, whose name and gender have not yet been disclosed.

In a past interview with Vogue, she described motherhood, "I just stared. I was just so in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere. Newborns are just so amazing," she gushed.
