Jharkhand: BCCL mine death, kin seek compensation & job

Dhanbad, Oct 3 (UNI) Family members and National Mazdoor union workers on Saturday staged a protest with the body of a BCCL worker, demanding Rs 1 crore compensation and a job for his dependent.
The protest followed the death of Haulpak operator Lalan Nonia in an accident at BCCL's Vishwakarma project in Dhansar on Friday.
The protesters alleged that safety standards were ignored at the project and sought action against those responsible for the accident.
Meanwhile, a team of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) reached the project site and began an inquiry into the incident.
The team is examining the circumstances in which the Haulpak fell into the open-cast mine, the safety arrangements at the time of the accident and whether any lapse occurred.
According to the available information, Nonia was operating a Haulpak when it allegedly became uncontrollable and fell around 50 feet into the mine. He died in the accident.
Work at the project was stopped following the incident. The body was sent for postmortem and was later brought to the deceased's residence.
The actual cause of the accident and responsibility, if any, will be established after the DGMS inquiry.
