Gumla, Oct 29 (UNI) Gumla police have recovered an AK-56 rifle, a country-made carbine and ammunition in Bharno police station area and arrested one person in connection with the seizure, police said today.
Superintendent of Police Harish Bin Zaman confirmed the recovery, according to a police statement issued on October 29.
The arrested person has been identified as Rajendra Yadav, a resident of Lekotoli village. Police are searching for Rohit Kumar Sharma, a resident of Chharda village under Sisai police station, and other suspected associates.
According to the police, the SP received confidential information on October 27 that Sharma and four to five associates had visited Yadav's house with illegal firearms and might be planning a major crime.
A raid team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Suresh Prasad Yadav reached the area at around 10.45 pm that night and found a red car with four to five occupants. On seeing the police, the occupants fled, taking advantage of darkness and nearby bushes, the statement said.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a country-made carbine, two 9 mm live cartridges and other items. During a subsequent search operation on October 28, Yadav was arrested, and an AK-56 rifle and ammunition were recovered at his instance, police said.
The seized items included two magazines, 34 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, two mobile phones, a Durga Puja donation slip and a sharp-edged axe-like weapon made of wood and iron.
Police said raids were continuing to apprehend the absconding suspects and establish the source and intended use of the weapons.
