Jharkhand: IIT-ISM chip honoured at SEMICON India 2026

Dhanbad, Sep 17 (UNI) A semiconductor chip developed by a team from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was honoured at SEMICON India 2026 during a chip handover ceremony in New Delhi today.
Research scholar Rahul Ranjan received the chip and memento from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with students representing 20 institutions across the country.
The chip was developed under a Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)-funded project titled “Ultra-Low Power Assistive Smart Glass” and fabricated at the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL), Mohali.
Led by Prof Rajeev Kumar Ranjan, Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering, the team developed a digital Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chip for real-time image processing using an OV7670 camera.
The chip is designed for compact and energy-efficient smart-glass applications, with its architecture and processing concepts having potential applications in biomedical imaging, assistive healthcare devices, wearable sensing and edge Artificial Intelligence systems.
Prof Rajeev Kumar Ranjan said the recognition would motivate young researchers to pursue work in semiconductor design and contribute to India's efforts towards self-reliance in chip manufacturing.
The live telecast of the inaugural and chip handover ceremonies was organised at Penman Auditorium, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, where Director Prof Sukumar Mishra, Registrar Prabodh Pandey and other faculty members were present.
The recognition highlights the institute's contribution to indigenous semiconductor research and low-power chip design initiatives supported by MeitY.
