K Kunhikrishnan bags Television Lifetime Achievement Award-2023

Thiruvananthapuram, June 28 (UNI) K Kunhikrishnan has been selected for the Television Lifetime Achievement Award-2023, the highest honour in the visual media sector instituted by the Kerala government, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the Malayalam television industry.
The selection jury comprised Baiju Chandran (winner of last year’s Lifetime Achievement Award) as chairman and television documentary directors Diana Silvester and Mohankumar Kallayil as members, with Kerala State Chalachitra Academy Secretary C. Ajoy serving as member secretary.
The jury noted that K Kunhikrishnan is a pioneer who laid the foundation for Malayalam television broadcasting. From 1977 to 2005, spanning nearly three decades, he worked with dedication for the technical and creative growth of the television medium.
He started his career in television as an Assistant Director at Doordarshan Kolkata in 1977. Later, as Deputy Director of Doordarshan Madras, he was responsible for Malayalam broadcasts from the Chennai centre.
In 1984, Kunhikrishnan became the first Director of Doordarshan Thiruvananthapuram, playing a pivotal role in nurturing an entire generation of visual media professionals.
He led the launch of Malayalam television broadcasting from Kerala on January 1, 1985. Under his leadership, the Thiruvananthapuram Doordarshan studio was upgraded in 1987 to become the largest television studio in India at that time, with enhanced technical facilities.
In the early 1990s, as private channels began expanding, he spearheaded efforts to make Doordarshan more popular and people-friendly amidst growing challenges. He went on to become the first Malayali to reach the post of Additional Director General at the national level in Doordarshan and retired from that position in 2005.
Beyond his career in broadcasting, Kunhikrishnan contributed to the academic understanding of television through his books, such as "Television and Society" and "Television: Observation and Analysis", and his award-winning article "Malayalam Television During the Flood Period", which won the Kerala State Television Award in 2018.
Kunhikrishnan began his professional career as a lecturer at Payyanur College and later worked as an Assistant Editor at ICAR and as a Scientific Officer at the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute before joining Doordarshan.
He has also translated several internationally renowned works into Malayalam, including The Naked Ape and The Naked Woman by Desmond Morris and the Japanese novels The Key and Jungle Book.
Announcing the award yesterday, Kerala Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian said the award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, a citation, and a sculpture.
