Karnataka BAC meet to decide session agenda, duration

Bengaluru, Sept 20 (UNI) The crucial Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting of the Karnataka Legislature is scheduled to be held at 10 am on Monday, with the duration and agenda of the special session expected to come under sharp discussion amid differences between the ruling party and the Opposition.
The BAC meeting, chaired by the Speaker, will finalise the broad schedule of the session and decide the issues to be taken up for discussion. The Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, leaders of the Opposition in both Houses and other members of the committee are expected to attend.
While the government has indicated that the session will primarily discuss the Kasturirangan report and related issues, the Opposition has been demanding that adequate time be provided to debate other pressing matters, particularly the drought situation in the state.
Opposition members are also likely to press for extending the session beyond the proposed three days, arguing that the drought situation requires a detailed discussion.
The Opposition is expected to point out that 124 taluks have already been declared drought-hit and seek consideration of the remaining 53 taluks, besides demanding sufficient time to discuss the government's response to the crisis.
The demand for extending the session by another seven days could become a major point of contention at the BAC meeting. The government, however, is understood to be reluctant to extend the session substantially, amid concerns that the Opposition could raise several other issues and disrupt proceedings.
The BAC meeting could therefore witness a sharp exchange between the Treasury benches and the Opposition over the duration and agenda of the session. A consensus in the committee would be crucial for ensuring smooth conduct of the proceedings.
The Speaker's decision would ultimately determine the conduct of the House, even as the BAC is expected to provide the forum for the government and Opposition to negotiate the session's programme.
