Karnataka BJP accuses Cong govt of 'conspiracy' to grab land belonging to Dalits

Bengaluru, June 27 (UNI) In a scathing attack on the ruling Congress government, Karnataka BJP today alleged that the state was actively trying to dispossess Dalits of legally allotted land in Mahadevapura, Bengaluru, to pave the way for commercial exploitation.
"Dalits are being denied the opportunity to become landowners or millionaires. The government cannot tolerate their success," said Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy.
Addressing a press conference, Narayanaswamy described the move as a "well-planned conspiracy" to grab land valued at Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 crore from Dalits and hand it over to vested interests with government backing.
He said the land in question — around 711 acres in Bidarahalli Hobli — had originally been classified as forest land under royal rule but was reclassified as revenue land in the 1950s and distributed to Dalit farmers by the Revenue Department through the Kadugodi Cooperative Society.
"The land was given under legal allotments. Title deeds were issued. Taxes were paid. How can the government now claim this is encroached land? This is an outright betrayal of Dalits," Narayanaswamy said.
He alleged that government-backed land mafias, eyeing this high-value property opposite a Tech Park, are pressuring the Forest Department to forcibly reclaim it. "This is nothing short of land loot. Over 5,000 Dalits live here in around 2,000 houses," he said.
Narayanaswamy demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah immediately convene a meeting with the Revenue, Forest, and Industries Ministers in the presence of the affected title deed holders to halt ongoing eviction operations. "Does the government stand with Dalits or with mafias?" he questioned.
The BJP leader accused the Forest Department of acting in defiance of court orders that had called for maintaining status quo. "Despite clear stay orders, over 60 acres and 30 guntas have been taken over. Houses are being demolished. People are being intimidated. Is this governance or gangsterism?" he asked.
He produced Pahani records from the 1950s and tax receipts to demonstrate that the land had been under legal cultivation by Dalits for decades.
Narayanaswamy further claimed that the government itself had allocated parts of the land to various entities — 153.28 acres to KIADB, 228.31 acres to the Railways, 44.36 acres for Metro, and additional portions for roads, housing, a crematorium, a temple with an Indira Canteen, and even a police station. “If this land truly belongs to the Forest Department, how were all these official allocations made?” he asked.
When former BJP MP S Muniswamy attempted to intervene, he was reportedly arrested. "When residents said the matter is in court, officials replied, 'We have been given a task, and we will complete it.' Is this a democracy or a mafia-run state?" Narayanaswamy thundered.
He alleged police high-handedness during protests, especially against Dalit women. "There were more police than protestors. Women were dragged by male officers. We have video evidence. What kind of hooliganism is this?" he said.
The BJP leader called for a white paper on the issue, asking the government to release a complete record from the 1950s to the present, detailing how and when land was allotted, and on what legal basis.
"If Metro, KIADB, and Railways were given land here through government orders, then the government itself is at fault. First, return the land given to these agencies," he said, demanding accountability.
Narayanaswamy warned of a statewide agitation if the Congress government failed to act with fairness and transparency. "This is not just about land. It is about justice. About upholding Dr Ambedkar’s Constitution. About protecting the rights of Dalits who were granted land legally, and now face eviction under a fabricated forest claim," he concluded.
