Karnataka faces food production concerns as drought destroys 80 pc of crops

Bengaluru, Oct 25 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday warned of a possible decline in food grain production following drought conditions that have caused crop losses of up to 80 per cent in certain regions of the State.
The deficient southwest monsoon, which ended last month, and prolonged dry spells have severely affected kharif sowing and damaged crops across drought-hit areas, he said.
“Currently, the State has an adequate stock of food grains. However, if food grain production declines in the coming days, suitable actions will have to be taken after discussing the consequences,” Parameshwara told reporters here.
Appealing to Karnataka MPs to rise above party affiliations, he urged them to work together to mitigate the impact of the drought and address the difficulties faced by farmers.
Expressing concern over delays in the release of crop-loss compensation, Parameshwara urged the Finance Department to release the approved funds immediately. He said the necessary orders had been issued and farmers would receive compensation once the funds were released.
“The approval from the Finance Department has been received. Money should be released immediately,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said the State government had not abandoned its plan to take an all-party delegation to New Delhi to seek drought relief from the Centre. The State had sought an appointment with the union government, but was yet to receive a response, he added.
Raising the issue of pending assistance under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), Parameshwara said the Centre must fulfil its responsibility towards the drought-hit State.
“If the Centre and the State continue trading allegations, it is the farmers who will ultimately suffer. Both governments must work towards resolving the problems faced by farmers,” he said.
The total crop loss due to the drought has been estimated at around Rs 62,000 crore, underlining the scale of the agricultural distress confronting Karnataka.
He stressed that coordinated action by the State and union governments was essential to ensure timely relief to farmers and minimise the impact of the drought on agricultural production.
