Karnataka farmers detained during ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation in Belagavi

Belagavi, Nov 5 (UNI) Police on Thursday detained more than 100 sugarcane farmers, including prominent farmer leader Chunappa Pujari, as they attempted to launch a ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation in Belagavi demanding better prices for their produce and an additional State Advised Price (SAP) from the Karnataka government.
The detention came amid mounting tensions over the sugarcane pricing dispute, with sections of farmers rejecting the price arrangement proposed by sugar factories and demanding higher remuneration.
Pujari, president of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, and other protesters were detained at Mukti Math on the outskirts of Belagavi before they could proceed with the planned agitation. Another farmer leader, Shashikant Padasalagi Guruji, was reportedly detained near Mudalagi while travelling towards Belagavi with supporters.
Police had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in parts of the district to prevent demonstrations and maintain law and order.
Belagavi City Police said around 100 protesters had been detained and shifted to different locations, clarifying that they had been detained and not formally arrested.
The agitation follows a disagreement over the proposal by sugar factories to pay Rs 3,600 per tonne of sugarcane. While some farmer representatives agreed to the arrangement after discussions with factory owners, other groups rejected it and demanded an additional Rs 1,000 per tonne as SAP from the State government.
The discussions were held under the chairmanship of Public Works Minister and Belagavi district in-charge Satish Jarkiholi. However, the proposed settlement failed to secure acceptance among all farmer organisations.
The protesting farmers have maintained that the proposed price does not adequately address their concerns and have called for continued agitation until their demands are met.
The detention of farmer leaders also triggered protests and calls for road blockades at various places in the district, adding to the pressure on the administration to resolve the dispute.
The sugarcane pricing issue has remained contentious in Karnataka, with farmer organisations and sugar factories differing over the remuneration payable to growers and the State government's role in ensuring a satisfactory settlement.
