Karnataka: Rajanna hints at Sept shakeup, CM dismisses buzz

Bengaluru, June 27 (UNI) Karnataka Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna has stirred a political buzz within the ruling Congress government by making a cryptic remark that hinted at major developments in the state’s political landscape after September.
Speaking to media, Rajanna stated, “Let September get over... there will be developments,” sparking widespread speculation of an impending cabinet reshuffle or a possible shift in leadership. He also alluded to the existence of “too many power centres” within the government, which many interpret as a veiled criticism of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s leadership and authority.
Fueling the speculation further, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara acknowledged that Rajanna might be privy to insider information. “He must have some information, otherwise he wouldn’t speak like that from such a responsible position,” Parameshwara told reporters, while distancing himself from the comment.
His admission reignited talk of an alleged post-2023 election power-sharing deal between Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, supposedly involving a rotational Chief Ministership.
There is also growing chatter within the party about a possible change in the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President position, which Shivakumar still holds.
Amid the escalating political buzz, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today, hit back at the media for overinterpreting Rajanna’s remarks. “No, no. If someone says ‘there are developments’, it doesn’t mean that things will happen like that. Did he (Rajanna) say it would happen like that? You people assumed it and wrote things your own way — what can be done about that? It is better to ignore it. I am not a journalist,” Siddaramaiah said, visibly irritated. His comments suggest a strategic attempt to downplay factional tensions and keep the focus on governance.
The Congress party has not issued an official statement on Rajanna’s remarks, though party insiders say the leadership wants to avoid distractions ahead of major policy and political decisions.
The timing of Rajanna’s statement comes as several Congress MLAs have criticized the administration’s handling of alleged irregularities in a housing scheme and the fallout from a recent stampede.
While Shivakumar has dismissed the leadership rift as media exaggeration, stating, “The CM has not lost control over the administration. Nothing like that,”questions around unity and leadership clarity continue to cloud the Congress.
