Telangana Govt to introduce comprehensive Act for gig workers: Minister

Hyderabad, June 27 (UNI) Telangana Employment and Labour Minister G Vivek Venkata Swamy announced on Friday that the state government is preparing to bring in a comprehensive policy
and legislation to safeguard the rights and welfare of gig workers.
Addressing the media at the Secretariat, the Minister said the government is actively considering
the formation of a special board dedicated to gig workers’ rights.
He mentioned that 66 suggestions have been received so far during consultations with stakeholders, and these will form the basis of the proposed law.
“There are already laws in place for gig workers in states like Rajasthan and Karnataka. Telangana will soon follow suit with a robust Gig Workers Act,” he said.
He added that the draft bill will soon be placed before the state Cabinet for approval.
The Minister credited Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for inspiring the initiative, saying Gandhi had earlier promised a law to protect the rights of gig workers.
Currently, there are around 4.5 lakh gig workers in Telangana, working across various sectors including food delivery, ride-hailing services, and logistics. The new legislation aims to bring
them under a formal framework, offering them essential protections.
Minister Vivek also indicated that the act could include provisions for collecting a 1–2 per cent
cess on transactions to fund welfare schemes for gig workers. The government is also exploring
the board-based implementation model to ensure effective execution and monitoring.
“We are committed to making Telangana a leading state in ensuring dignity, rights, and social
security for gig workers,” he affirmed.
