Kashmiri Pandit activist Rakesh Handoo gets five-day police remand in ‘cyberterrorism’ case

Srinagar, Oct 27 (UNI) A Kashmiri Pandit activist, Rakesh Handoo, arrested in connection with a ‘cyberterrorism’ case registered in north Kashmir’s Baramulla, was on Tuesday remanded to five days of police custody.
Handoo was arrested by a Baramulla Police team from his residence in Faridabad, Haryana, on October 17, in connection with an FIR registered at Police Station Baramulla.
The FIR was registered on September 12 following a complaint by Rohit Raina, a Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package employee posted in the Finance Department in Baramulla. The complaint concerns the alleged circulation of a threat letter through a publicly accessible social media account.
Police invoked Sections 66F and 84C of the Information Technology Act in the case.
Police alleged that a publicly accessible X account repeatedly circulated “threat related electronic material" purportedly originating from groups identified as “Soldier of Resistance" and the “United Liberation Council".
Investigators had earlier issued notices directing Handoo to join the investigation. However, he allegedly failed to appear despite multiple notices. Police subsequently obtained a court warrant and arrested him in Haryana.
In August, panic gripped the Kashmiri pandits after purported threat letters naming some employees, along with their contact details, were circulated.
Following the threats and concerns over their safety, hundreds of Kashmiri Pandit employees appointed under the Prime Minister’s special employment package were asked to abstain from their duties for nearly three weeks.
