BJP makes major rural inroads in Punjab as 31 sarpanches join party in Gurdaspur

Neeraj Bali
Chandigarh, Oct 27 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed a significant political breakthrough in Punjab's rural belt on Tuesday as 31 village sarpanches joined the party in Gurdaspur district, alongside 15 other local leaders, strengthening its grassroots network in the Dinanagar assembly constituency.
The induction of 46 leaders, including two block presidents and five panchayat members, marks a major organisational gain for the BJP as it seeks to expand its influence beyond Punjab's urban centres.
The group joined under the leadership of Angrez Singh, a former state joint secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party's youth wing, in the presence of senior BJP leaders.
Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon welcomed the new entrants, describing their induction as an important step towards building a stronger village-level organisation.
"The joining of sarpanches, panchayat members and other office-bearers working at the village level will strengthen the party's grassroots connections with the public," Dhillon said, according to a party statement.
The entry of elected village representatives gives the BJP access to an expanded network of local leadership in Gurdaspur, potentially strengthening its ability to mobilise support and engage directly with rural communities.
The sarpanches joining the party represent villages including Mailhan, Tanda, Khairpur, Nukeria, Bathowal, Deda, Rawal, Talwandi, Bhagwanpur and Hussainpur.
Former sarpanch Naveen Saini and several youth and block-level functionaries were also among the new entrants.
BJP state general secretaries Anil Sareen and Rajnish Dhiman, senior leader Fatehjang Bajwa and state media head Vineet Joshi attended the induction.
The party said the new members would play an active role in strengthening its organisation and expanding its outreach across the region.
The development is being projected by the BJP as evidence of its growing appeal among village-level leaders in Punjab, where expanding its rural footprint remains a key political objective.
