Kerala supports women's access to menstrual hygiene products during travel

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 6 (UNI) The Kerala Government on Tuesday launched the WOMN (Women On the Move & Menstrual Needs) initiative to ensure easy availability of sanitary napkins for women and girls during travel and at public places.
The initiative, being implemented by the Women and Child Development Department as part of the State Government's 100-day action programme, was launched at the Thampanoor KSRTC Bus Terminal here by Women and Child Development, Labour, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister Bindu Krishna.
The first phase covers 14 KSRTC centres, where sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators have been installed, providing women access to sanitary products as well as facilities for their safe disposal.
The vending machines have been installed near toilets. Each packet contains three sanitary napkins and is priced at Rs 10, making the facility accessible at an affordable rate.
Launching the project, the Minister said menstrual hygiene was an important aspect of women's health and dignity. Availability of sanitary napkins at affordable prices at the time of need, particularly during travel and while using public spaces, should be regarded as an essential facility, she said.
The project also addresses the disposal of used sanitary napkins by providing incinerators, thereby helping ensure their environmentally responsible disposal.
The initiative is being implemented by the Women and Child Development Department in collaboration with HLL Lifecare. KSRTC sanitation workers will receive training for replenishing the vending machines and cleaning and maintaining the incinerators.
The department has allocated Rs 16 lakh for the first phase.
The scheme is planned to be extended to major tourist destinations and other public places in addition to KSRTC depots. KSRTC has proposed extending the facility to 93 more depots, the Minister said.
She said the expansion of WOMN in phases would help strengthen facilities enabling women to travel in public spaces safely, confidently and independently.
The Minister said the Women and Child Development Department's role was not confined to providing support to women, but encompassed ensuring their safety, health, economic self-reliance, social participation, dignity and confidence.
Ward councillor R. Harikumar, KSRTC CMD Pramoj Shankar and Women and Child Development Department Director V. Vigneswari were among those who attended the function.
