Keran Heritage Centre set to be inaugurated close to LoC in north Kashmir to boost border tourism

Srinagar, Nov 4 (UNI) Once known primarily as a conflict-prone frontier along the Line of Control (LoC), Keran Valley in north Kashmir’s Kupwara is gradually emerging as an offbeat tourist destination, with efforts underway to showcase its natural beauty and rich heritage.
In a fresh push to this transformation, the Keran Heritage Centre at Pharkian is all set to be inaugurated which would add a new attraction to a region that opened its doors to tourists in 2023.
Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Col Suneel Bartwal said the Heritage Centre is set against the backdrop of the Kishanganga Valley and surrounded by pine forests and brings together heritage, hospitality and national attractions to position Keran as a new tourism destination.
“For decades, Keran has symbolised resilience, courage and the enduring spirit of communities inhabiting India’s frontier. The new Heritage Centre seeks to bring this legacy to life, offering visitors an opportunity to discover the valley beyond its breathtaking landscapes and connect with the stories of sacrifice, service and commitment that define its identity,’ he said.
The National Flag site forms the centrepiece of the complex.
“With the majestic Tricolour soaring above an imposing fort-inspired gateway, crowned by twin domed towers, the site presents a striking tribute to the nation. The commemorative walls bearing the inscriptions ‘Sacrifice, Service, Unity’ and ‘Higher Grounds, Stronger Bonds, A Greater India’ reinforce the values of patriotism, national unity and the enduring bond between the nation and its frontier communities,” Lt Col Bartwal said.
An artillery gun display and landscaped pathways further enhance the setting, creating a space for reflection and national pride.
The spokesman said a dedicated heritage gallery offers visitors an insight into the history, landscapes and cultural identity of Keran Valley. Through its visual portrayal of the region, the gallery seeks to preserve its stories and provide a deeper appreciation of this remarkable frontier destination.
A valley-view café, named Keran Café – Pharkian, has also been established within the complex. It will offer Kashmiri Kahwa, coffee, hot beverages and refreshments, with visitors able to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and pine forests.
The initiative aims to attract visitors to the lesser-explored frontier region, strengthen tourism infrastructure and create opportunities for local participation and economic activity.
The project is also part of a broader vision to develop border areas as centres of tourism, cultural exchange and economic opportunity, the statement said.
