Kim Jong un visits China to inaugurate new border bridge in bid to strengthen bilateral ties

Dandong, Oct 24 (UNI) North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has visited China to inaugurate a bridge linking the two countries, signalling his intention to strengthen ties with Beijing amid deteriorating relations with South Korea.
Kim arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday after crossing the New Yalu River Bridge, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry and China’s state-run Xinhua news agency.
During the visit, the WPK General Secretary met Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo. The two toured a car factory and pledged to strengthen bilateral relations.
Kim said North Korea “stands ready to work with China to carry forward their historical friendship and expand practical cooperation, thereby delivering tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries”, Xinhua reported.
Wang later accompanied Kim to the bridge to see him off, the agency added.
The visit comes ahead of the October 25 anniversary of China’s first major victory in the Korean War, which followed the entry of Chinese troops into North Korea across the Yalu River in October 1950. The timing appears intended to highlight the longstanding ties between Pyongyang and Beijing.
Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported on Saturday that traffic restrictions had been imposed around the bridge and a museum documenting China’s role in the Korean War. Hotel bookings in the surrounding area had also reportedly been restricted. Diplomatic sources told the agency that the measures were linked to a visit by a senior North Korean official.
The 3km bridge opened in mid-October, 12 years after China completed construction. The project had been delayed by difficulties on the North Korean side.
The opening follows the inauguration in early September of the first road bridge connecting North Korea and Russia across their short-shared border, giving Pyongyang another land route to one of its main international partners.
Saturday’s trip was Kim’s sixth visit to China and his first since September 2025, when he attended a military parade in Beijing alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Xi visited Pyongyang in June, marking his first trip to North Korea in seven years.
Relations between North Korea and South Korea, meanwhile, have continued to deteriorate.
Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, has issued around 10 statements criticising Seoul since late September, a frequency South Korea’s Unification Ministry has described as unusual. She has also announced plans to resume loudspeaker broadcasts along the border within days.
Xi is due to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen on November 18-19, fuelling speculation about a possible meeting between Kim and US President Donald Trump.
