Kishau project agreement has ended six-decade deadlock: Anurag Thakur

Dharamshala, Sep 16 (UNI) Former union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur on Wednesday said the agreement signed by six states for the Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project has ended a six-decade-long deadlock, and criticised Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for seeking political credit for the agreement.
Thakur credited the Narendra Modi-led Central Government with facilitating the consensus reached on September 15 following discussions involving Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi.
He said the project has been accorded National Project status, with the Centre expected to bear about 90 per cent of its cost, while the remaining 10 per cent will be shared by the participating states.
He said an arrangement had also been made to reduce Himachal Pradesh's financial burden relating to its share of the project's power component.
According to Thakur, the project is aimed at irrigating around 97,000 hectares of land and generating nearly 1,476 million units of clean hydropower, besides contributing to water and drinking-water security in northern India.
He alleged that successive Congress governments had failed to resolve the project-related issues for nearly six decades.
Thakur described the agreement as an example of cooperative federalism and said the focus should remain on the interests of all participating states and future generations.
