Himachal CM leads anti-chitta walkathon in Una, warns drug peddlers

Shimla, September 16 (UNI)Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday led an anti-chitta awareness walkathon in Una, declaring that there was “no place” in the state for people involved in selling the synthetic drug and destroying the lives of youth for money.
A large number of students and people from across Una district participated in the walkathon, which began at Indira Stadium, passed through the new bus stand and culminated back at the stadium. Before the march, the Chief Minister administered an anti-chitta pledge to participants and called upon people, particularly the youth, to actively join the campaign against drugs.
Addressing the gathering, Sukhu said the state government was taking firm and sustained action against drug trafficking, but government and police measures alone could not eliminate the menace. He stressed that families, teachers, friends and society had an equally important role in preventing young people from falling into addiction.
“I want to clearly say from the land of Una that there is no place in Himachal for those who sell chitta and destroy the lives of our youth for money,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the government’s approach towards those involved in the illegal drug trade was clear and uncompromising.
He said strict legal action would be taken against drug peddlers and traffickers, while young people already struggling with addiction would be dealt with compassion and provided support to recover and return to normal life.
The Chief Minister said drug sellers and those battling addiction could not be treated in the same manner. While traffickers must face legal action, those caught in addiction needed care, support and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.
Appealing to young people to remain vigilant, Sukhu said friends were often the first to notice behavioural changes and could help prevent drug abuse at an early stage.
“Your small act of alertness can save someone’s son, someone’s daughter and can prevent a family from falling apart,” he said, urging youngsters to stand by friends and prevent them from taking the path towards drug abuse.
Sukhu said the police was continuously acting against chitta networks and drug traffickers, but the battle could not be won by enforcement alone. While police could arrest traffickers and the government could enact laws, families, friends, teachers and society could prevent a child from taking drugs in the first place, he said.
He urged mothers, fathers, teachers, panchayats, Mahila Mandals, Yuva Mandals and youth to become active participants in the anti-drug campaign.
He appealed to people to report reliable information regarding drug sales or trafficking to authorities through the toll-free emergency number 112. The government had also made provisions for rewarding information that helps combat the drug trade, he said.
The Chief Minister recalled that the anti-chitta campaign was launched around nine months ago to mobilise society against drugs. He said large public campaigns had subsequently been held in Shimla on November 5, 2025, Dharamshala on December 1, Hamirpur on December 16 and Bilaspur on December 26.
He said the participation witnessed in Una reflected the same resolve and unity. “We are walking for our children and our families. We are walking for the future of Himachal Pradesh,” he said.
Sukhu also appreciated students who travelled from distant areas to participate despite temperatures ranging between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius.
He announced a holiday in all government and private schools across Una district on September 17.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated a three-storey Block Development Office building at Una constructed at a cost of Rs 3.87 crore and laid the foundation stone of the Rampur bridge on Santoshgarh road, estimated to cost Rs 9.55 crore.
