Kohli rewrites ODI records, surpasses Tendulkar, equals Ponting

Auckland, Nov 4 (UNI) Virat Kohli turned the opening ODI against New Zealand into another landmark occasion in his illustrious career, producing a commanding 74 to rewrite the record books, surpass Sachin Tendulkar in ODI run chases and draw level with Ricky Ponting as the highest run-scorer against the Black Caps.
In a rain-interrupted contest on Wednesday, Kohli's innings was not merely about runs but another demonstration of his extraordinary consistency in the 50-over format, where the former India captain continues to set benchmarks for generations to follow.
Kohli took his ODI run tally in chases to 8,741, moving past Tendulkar's 8,720 to become the highest run-scorer in this category. More strikingly, Kohli has achieved the feat at an average of 66.21 and a strike rate of 95.03, compared to Tendulkar's 42.33 and 88.44 respectively.
The 74-run knock also took Kohli's aggregate against New Zealand to 1,971, bringing him level with Ponting at the top of the list of highest run-scorers against the Kiwis in ODIs.
Tendulkar follows with 1,750 runs, while Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (1,568), Sanath Jayasuriya (1,519) and South Africa's Jacques Kallis (1,449) complete the top six.
Kohli also added another entry to his impressive list of away-ODI achievements by registering his second-fastest half-century outside India, reaching the landmark in just 35 balls against New Zealand.
His fastest away ODI fifty remains the 34-ball effort against Australia in Canberra in 2016. He had scored a 36-ball half-century against South Africa in Centurion in 2018 and a 38-ball effort against Sri Lanka at Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium in 2017.
What makes Kohli's latest landmarks particularly significant is the consistency with which he has sustained his excellence across conditions, opponents and match situations.
At a stage when every innings adds another chapter to his remarkable ODI legacy, Kohli's Auckland performance once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most formidable batsmen in the history of the format.
