Kolkata law college rape case: Police collect DNA samples from victim and accused

Kolkata, June 29 (UNI) The investigation into the alleged gang rape of a female law student on the campus of South Calcutta Law College progressed today with the police collecting the DNA samples from the victim and all the accused.
According to police sources, DNA samples of the survivor and three of the accused have been collected. These samples will be sent for forensic testing, which investigators believe will be crucial in establishing the details of the crime.
The outcome of the DNA tests is expected to significantly shape the direction of the investigation.

In a related development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the case has been expanded. Initially composed of five members, the SIT now includes nine officers, one of whom is a female sub-inspector. This move is seen as a response to the sensitive nature of the case and the growing complexities of the investigation.

The alleged incident took place on June 25, between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM, inside the college campus. The survivor, a student at the law college, filed a complaint that led to the arrest of four individuals. The initial arrests included a former student and two current students of the state-run institution.

A fourth accused, a security guard employed at the college, was later arrested. Investigators say the crime occurred in the guard's room, where the guard allegedly remained a silent spectator.

The four arrested individuals were produced before the Alipore court on Thursday. Police sought 14-day custody, but the court granted remand only until next Tuesday. The police have not disclosed the names of the accused. However, according to the FIR filed based on the survivor’s statement, the individuals are identified by the code names ‘J’, ‘M’, and ‘P’.

Yesterday, police took the survivor back to the crime scene to reconstruct the incident. The reconstruction, which lasted over two hours, took place on the college premises.
Officials have confirmed the retrieval of seven hours of CCTV footage from the night of the incident. All four accused were seen in the footage, confirming their presence at the scene during the critical time frame.

In a significant breakthrough, a 90-second video clip showing the alleged assault was recovered from the phone of one of the accused. This matches the survivor’s claim that she was blackmailed and threatened with the footage.

However, police confirmed that the video had not been circulated, as the accused were arrested shortly after the incident and their devices were seized. All mobile phones have been sent for forensic examination.

In connection with the ongoing investigation, police searched the residence of the accused ‘P’ in the Chatterjeehat area of Howrah. ‘P’ is reportedly well known in the locality, and neighbours expressed shock over his alleged involvement. During the search, investigators questioned family members and seized several documents. The presence of ‘P’ at the crime scene has also been confirmed through CCTV footage. UNI XC SSP
